Course description: This instructional course focuses on the effective identification of complex needs (goal and objective setting), and translating these into appropriate product characteristics, along with outcomes from assessment. Supported by the latest research, this course will ensure that attendees understand and are competent in the critical components of effective prescription.
This interactive course is suitable for all practitioners responsible for prescribing postural equipment for children and young people with complex physical disabilities who wish to sharpen their ability to translate assessment findings into products which effectively and justifiably meet the needs of their users.
Aim: Participants will be able to competently and confidently prescribe and adjust specialist equipment to match the needs of children and young people with complex physical disabilities.
Objectives: Upon completion of this instructional course, participants will be able to:
1. Define the various factors which affect the prescribing process
2. Explain the differences between, and implications of, these factors
3. Understand the importance of considering all factors before prescribing
4. Outline the process for translating factors into product characteristics
5. Justify the need for product trials when appropriate
6. Draft reports for non-standard purchases
7. Define post-purchase good practice requirements
Presenter: Clare Wright (MClinRes, BSc (Hons) OT) graduated in 1994 from the University of Ulster. Clare's roles have included hospital-based rehabilitation, community paediatrics and managing a community paediatric team of therapists. Clare moved to James Leckey Design in 2005, where she undertook a Master of Clinical Research Degree. Clare is a member of PMG's Executive Committee and chairs the newly developed Special Interest Group sub-committee. She also acts as temporary chair for the R&D / Outcomes special interest group and sits on the R&D sub-committee. Clare is a member of RESNA, and has presented to various groups nationally, and internationally at the International Seating Symposium. Clare, as the Clinical Research Manager in James Leckey Design, undertakes research projects, and provides education and training on a range of topics.
