BDF Newlife Report on Unmet Need in Children’s Equipment
Most people would assume that disabled and terminally ill children are protected and provided for under established laws, using the taxes we pay into our welfare state system. But we believe this is far from reality for the majority of children in the UK.
In this report we will reveal the real issues behind a scandalously poor system of provision that has left many of these children without the special equipment they need to protect them from injury, prevent their condition worsening, enable them to reach their full potential and allow them to be cared for safely.
EPIOC Research Papers
We have two papers to make available.
Older adults’ use of, and satisfaction with, electric powered indoor/outdoor wheelchairs.
Policy review of children and young people
Budget 2006 announced that the 2007 Comprehensive Spending Review would be informed by a series of policy reviews, one of which was a review of children and young people, building on the Government's strategy to improve their outcomes.
The Review consists of four sub-reviews. A final report in response to three of those sub-reviews have now been published, setting out the action the Government will now take to:
- raise the life chances of all children and young people, preventing problems by building resilience to the risks of poor outcomes and supporting children and young people as soon as possible when problems emerge;
- support those families with the poorest outcomes - caught in a cycle of low achievement; and
- support families with disabled children to improve their outcomes.
RESNA Position on the Application of Wheelchair Standing Devices
The Rehabilitation Engineering & Assistive Technology Society of North America has produced its position paper on the justification for standing
wheelchairs for the US and Canada. In these countries insurance
companies pay for wheelchairs and other health care needs. The insurance
companies follow Government coverage policies (Medicare/Medicaid) which
are constantly under review. RESNA has a long history of consultation
with Government over Assistive Technology issues in order to improve
services to individuals with disabilities.

Universal Assessment Form For Seated Mobility (2005 Draft)
This is one of a pair of draft assessment forms that have been brought together as a British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) initiative by a team of therapists, engineers, and contributors from the commercial sector, in an attempt to combine best practice, and to service the needs of the medical and
commercial sectors, while using the latest measurement standards.
This basic form covers the requirements for clients without complex needs, but has been designed to alert assessors to where a more detailed assessment, possibly by a more qualified person, is needed. There is a ‘complex’ form to cover these needs.
The team is seeking feedback as to the value, and shortcomings, of these forms. Please would you try this form out and let us have your feedback.
